The PS VR is mostly useless without the Playstation Camera and limited without a pair of Move controllers which are all sold separately. Bundles with the headset and neccesary accessories are the best way to get everything you need. It’s not cheap but the Playstation VR is by far the most affordable good quality virtual reality headset in 2016.

Playstation VR Bundles

The Playstation Camera and Move controllers have been available for some time now and sales have been disappointing for Sony. Bundling them with the VR headset at a discounted price makes great business sense for the company and retailers will seize the opportunity to clear out stock. We also expect lots of Playstation VR bundle deals with Batman: Arkham VR, one of the most popular games being released for the VR platform.

Retailers will be particularly keen to shift the original PS4 as the PS4 Slim & Pro mid-generational updates also released very recently.

Playstation VR Review

One of the most crucial parts about a VR headset is the screen and having used the higher resolution Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, I’m impressed by the quality of the Playstation VR’s single screen 1920×1080 image. In game text is very readable thanks to a minimized screen door effect. The field of view on the Playstation VR is narrower than it’s competitors but not by a lot. Motion tracking is where the PS VR feels a little bit lacking. It’s single camera works really well except for some occasional problems keeping track of the Move controllers. But it’s viewing angle is narrow enough that I frequently bumped up against it limits. Plus you’ll never be able to turn around 180 degrees and shoot a monster that pops up behind you because your body would block the camera’s view of your hands. If a game supports it, you can see your Dualshock 4 in the VR environment exactly where you are holding it. But in many games you are required or strongly encouraged to use the Playstation Move controllers which is a much more natural way of reaching out and touching things.

On the outside the Playstation VR looks like a prop from a sci-fi movie set. All of its weight rests on the padded plastic crown around your head with the screen dangling down from that instead of being pulled tight against your face to hold it on. That makes it more comfortable than the Rift or the Vive. A button on the underside of the screen allows you to slide it closer to or farther from your eyes which lets you adjust for comfort or peak out without taking the headset off. I love the nar total blackout of the outside world thanks to the split rubber flap that wraps around your nose as you put it on. However the replaceable rubber material that comes into contact with your face isn’t breathable so it feels sweaty during a vigorous play session. Because there’s just one screen there is no way to adjust the inter pupilary distance or IPB. That said, none of us at Cyber Monday Hero have had any trouble getting a clear image.

Verdict

Despite the Playstation VR’s relatively low resolution it looks very good in games. The headset is comfortable to wear and easy to use after you’ve dealt with its many wires. Paired with Move controllers it provides good motion tracking on your hands. It’s a lot of fun to be on the forefront of something as exciting as VR and the PS VR is the most affordable way to do it.
